How to write an effective hotbox message
Yes, we really ARE going to teach you how to communicate like a human being. No, we shouldn't have to do this; but hey, it'll save us the trouble of deleting you later if you learn to actually be polite and respectful now. We call it preventative maintenance. ;-)

You may have at one time or another asked yourself why you don’t get replies to your hotbox messages. You also may be wondering how to change your writing style to make your efforts more effective to achieve what you were setting out to do.

It just takes a little getting used to, but we all have the potential to be effective communicators. Let’s start with what we want to achieve by writing to another local. We all have a goal in mind of what we want to accomplish when we open the dialog box and start typing away. Whether you are looking for a friend, a relationship, or a pen pal, there are generally two (good) reasons for writing to another member:

1) To start a dialog and get a response
2) To give a compliment without the intention of further communication

Now that you have a goal in mind, you can now think of ways to achieve this goal.

If you would like to pursue Goal #1 and get a response there are certain key elements to communication that will make your endeavors a success:

1) Read before you write! Point out something in that person’s profile that made you want to respond to them; s/he will appreciate that you took the time to read his/her profile. Perhaps, pointing out something you have in common would be a good starting point for communication.
2) Make it thoughtful, insightful, and original: Think to yourself, “What would make me want to respond to someone?” Add in a quote, expound on a subject that the mofo mentioned in his/her profile, ask questions about the person’s life, or elaborate on how that person relates to your life. Being original will get you everywhere.
3) Compliment photos, if you desire: But keep it light and put the compliment towards the end of the letter. As much as people love compliments, that’s not all they want to hear, let them get to know you!
4) Avoid small talk: “Hi”, “How are you?”, “Wanna chat?” may work 1 out of 20 times if you want to put forth the effort to mass email every member on the site, but it will not grant you much credit if there is one person, in particular, for which you wish to communicate. Effort is noticed.
5) Do not badger! Giving respect, being decent, and utilizing common sense are not only what you should do when writing, it is also a must; anything else is likely to either get you blacklisted or dis-membered for not abiding by the rules.
6) Sign your name: Yes, we all have grown used to identifying people through their screen names, but revealing your given name will make you more real to the recipient rather than just being another picture on the screen.
7) Give it time: It’s okay if it takes the other member some time to respond. Women, especially, get more communications than men and often get overloaded causing response time to slide. If it has been 3 or 4 days since you sent that first email, then follow the above guidelines and send another one. Many locals will appreciate the effort and take it as a sign that you truly are interested in getting to know him/her as a person.

If you would like to follow Goal #2 and give a compliment without the intentions to communicate:

1) Keep it tasteful: As above, respect, decency, and common sense abide as the standard!
2) Compliment on more than just photos: If it is an attractive person, he/she has most likely heard compliments on their physical qualities about a gazillion times. Complimenting a member as a person or on their thoughts or opinions will be appreciated.
3) Use the same guidelines as if you were seeking a response: They are an effective form of communication.
4) Provide the reason for communication: First give the compliment, then give the reason why you are giving the compliment, and then follow-up with a statement such as “I'm just sending you a compliment to show you that someone noticed and a response is not necessary.”

You don’t have to be a great writer to follow the above guidelines; you just have to know the basics. Happy Writing!!
