"Hi my name is Rowdy, a name given to me when I was young. My mother used to tell me to calm down a lot when I was young but I didn't listen very well back then. Now I am about eleven years old, the prime of my life they say. An age where most horses are at their best: easy to ride, gentle and loving. But you see no one wants me anymore. I've had several homes over the last few years but no one wants me now. You see....I'm blind, completely totally blind in both eyes. I have the cuts and bruises of the things I have ran into lately to prove it. I'm strong, lovable, a good riding horse and pretty good looking but who wants a blind horse? My last owner got tired of taking care of me and just gave me away. Yes it hurt my feelings but my feelings of worthlessness hurts worst. I use to run fast thur the pasture and then jump over the creek but now I'm lucky to find my way to the barn to find my feed. Sunshine is my girlfriend, she likes me best of all the other horses and sometimes we share our food when I can find it. She helps me find my way alot. I've learn to depend on my smell and my hearing alot more these days but I still run into things.....but it's ok. All I ever wanted was a loving owner who would take care of me the way a horse needs to be taken care of and someone who will love me forever. I miss the good old days of someone being on my back running thur the fields of clover or a simple walk in the woods on a beautiful day. But those days are all over for me now. Not long ago I got my halter caught on the water spigot and I couldn't get loose, yes I got yelled at! I broke the water spigot off into the ground. But the most amazing thing happened, they loved on me and told me how much they loved me. It felt great! Then they took my halter off so that it wouldn't happen again. I heard the people talking that it cost one hundred dollars to fix it. They sure are good to me here. I also heard them talking one day about how they are running out of money, whatever that is. I think they need it for hay and feed but I'm not sure. One day I heard the people talking about someone named "GOD" but I have never seen him at the farm here where I stay but he seems to be important. Because the next thing you know there is lots of new hay being delivered and a bunch of the feed that I love to eat. If I could talk to him I would thank him for this place and these wonderful people here, maybe someday I will get a chance to see him. They sure do take good care of me here. The vet comes regularly, the farrier and most of all that good food that I love so much. Sometimes they come and work on my teeth so I can eat better. I eat slow sometimes and Thunder steals my food, But the one lady gives me extra. I've heard them mention the word "euthanize", I'm not sure what that means but they said no way would they ever do that to me so it must be something bad. They love me here and I will spend the remaining days of my life here. I'll never get adopted and no one will ever foster a blind horse. I'm happy they have me here because I know that I'm safe and I am loved my these wonderful people."

Learn more about the new bill in Congress PREVENTION OF EQUINE CRUELTY ACT OF 2009 (HR 503). A bill was introduce in 2006 to ban the slaughter of America's horses. It was pass by the House and then sent to the Senate where it was stalled so long that it was dismissed and a new one is being fought. The bill will make it illegal to transport American horses to foreign countries for slaughter. The last slaughter house in America was closed in September 2007 but the war is not over yet. American horses are being hauled out of the country, sent to Canada and Mexico then overseas for slaughter. These horses have earned their rightful place in shaping American history over the years. Unfortunately some horses are faced with these terrible experiences. This could have been Rowdy's fate! You can also visit www.SaveDaHorses.Org to learn more about what happens to these horses that are being slaughter.
The majority of horses that were going to slaugher were not the old and sick ones. Old or sick horses should be euthanized by their owners if the owner is no longer able to care for them. The HUGE problem wasn't created by the closure of slaughter houses. It was created by irresponsible horse breeders. Want to bring the horse market back? Want to reduce the number of horses going to rescues? GELD your stallions and keep your mares open. There are too many good horses out there to be breeding more.
I wasn't specifically stating that your rescue breeds horses. Rather, there would not be near as many horses going to rescues if there was not irresponsible breeding.
