Kimber Theibout couldn't think of anything that might be objectionable when she and partner Tracy Kushner opened their new scrapbooking store on Dutchman's Parkway.
Theibout said she thought the name they chose, Scrap N Crap, was kind of catchy. They spent hundreds of dollars branding the store prior to its Sept. 11 grand opening. It was a big success, with several dozen people a day coming in, lured by the chalk paint she used to decorate the windows with the store name.
When she took bids for a permanent sign, Thiebout said she was happy with the bid offered by Rueff Signs at about $3,200. But when the sign company applied for a permit with the city of St. Matthews, a problem arose.
"The don't want the word 'crap' on the side of the building," Thiebout said. And St. Matthews officials aren't budging on the issue, which seems a little, well, prudish.
So the new business, which had to erase the chalk on the windows after the grand opening, isn't seeing the kind of traffic it was expecting, and it can't put a sign up that has the name of the business on it.
Thiebout is trying to make light of the issue, and is altering the sign to simply show its logo, without the "offensive" wording.
We are so easily offended!! Who is this going to hurt? The City of St Matthews is full of scrap! The City of Louisville has named their Parking Authority PARC. Play it backwards. I hope I haven't started something. Let these people have their darned (should I have said that?) sign.
