When Zak and Laila Riles moved back to Louisville, they discovered that the city was lacking something that was plentiful in environmentally-friendly Oregon.
High-quality green building materials and supplies.
So the Riles opened the Bluegrass Green Co. in a storefront on Baxter Ave., selling products designed for homeowners interested in putting green building principles into their homes. The store offer environmeally-friendly paints, lighting, flooring, countertops and toilets.
Now Bluegrass Green is moving, naturally, to the NuLu neighborhood that's home to the Green Building, in one of the buildings formerly owned by Wayside Christian Mission at 804 E. Market St.
Neighbors there include the Fresh Start Growers Supply at 1007 E. Jefferson St. Nearby, plans are underway for a Farmers Market on Jefferson and a Creation Gardens development and expansion on Market, across from the Green Building.
Riles thinks his business fits right in.
"There's increasing demand from homeowners for these products, and they don't want the stuff from the box stores," he said.
I went into a flooring place a year ago and asked about a type of green flooring, the salesman laughed and said: "We have it, but the other salesmen deny it because they don't want to 'mess' with it." You can imagine what I thought of that. Glad to hear about some competition.
mightykindness.org is a good way to find out about other Green businesses in Louisville, local organic farmers, etc..they hold two music festivals per year where they allow artists, green biz, farmers etc to have booths for free
I personally would like to see a Green Construction company come to Louisville. I would love to tear down, recycle my old home, and have a new Green, Energy Efficient, Recyclable house to put in its place!
