The other night, 18-point underdog Miami of Ohio nearly beat the Kentucky Wildcats in basketball. The Cats were saved on a last-second shot by freshman sensation John Wall.
Which sets up the post-game press conference by Miami coach Charlie Coles. He was asked by a Lexington reporter this question: "How did you let the game get away from you?"
Now, that's a dumb question. But it's kind of typical in post-game press conferences. And while coaches are often polite about how they respond, sometimes they let loose and tell the questioner how they really feel. Coles did just that.
Which is why I'm pulling for Miami of Ohio the rest of the year, just in hopes that Charlie Coles gets some national spotlight.
I don't know. I kind of roll my eyes at this stuff. My opinion is suspect since I'm not much of a sports fan. But when I see coaches act like this, I think: "You're fine with the stupid questions asked everyday that amount to "How awesome ARE you, exactly?" But then you get one you don't like and you're going to mock the sports reporters. Fine. I think they should ask only intelligent questions like: "Why should basketball be better funded than kindergarten?" See how the coaches like that! Hah!
Basketball at this level makes money for lots of other sports, activities, and programs so asking "Why should basketball be better funded than kindergarten?" isn't applicable.
I agree, coaches that proving anything when they go off on a reporter. Reporters must want to get a coach going like this. Makes things more interesting w/o reporters actually having to a thing. This was a stupid question, however, and it did give this guy a chance to use his reaction as a way to promote his team's effort brilliantly.
