It's unthinkable, but it's come to light that LMPD Detective Crystal Marlowe has accused at least a dozen innocent people (including kids) of crimes they did not commit, yet the LMPD isn't relieving her from duty just yet.
Marlowe has apparently watched too many episodes of cop shows like The Wire, wherein police take great liberties with justice in order to pursue their targets.
According to the Courier-Journal:
Detective Crystal Marlowe has pursued charges against some defendants for crimes they could not have committed because they were already in jail. And in other cases, she charged people based on identifications that the victims later said they never made.
Some of those Marlowe accused spent days or even months in jail before they were exonerated, The Courier-Journal found in a review of cases handled by Marlowe.
Assistant Public Defender Terra Meek goes so far as to say: “Literally, you see her (Marlowe's) name on a case and you groan,” Meek said to reporters. “I think she easily coerces people, victims, to make identifications, even when they're not sure.” One of Meek's clients, an elderly woman, reported that Marlowe tried to nudge her into naming a specific perp in a mugshot lineup, even though the woman said she wasn't sure. She asked to see more mugshots and was dismissed.
One of the people apparently framed by Marlowe is Tommy Slaughter, who was 17 when Marlowe filed two robbery charges against him last year. According to Marlowe, two victims positively identified Slaughter from a “police photo pack” as being the perp. Unfortunately, Marlowe never bothered to do a simple check on Slaughter's whereabouts.
Had she done so, she would have found that Slaughter couldn't have committed any robbery, because he already was being held at the Lincoln Village Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Hardin County.
Oops.
Is this deliberate? Is this evil? Or is it just stupidity or sloppiness? The C-J story goes on to say that of 130 felony cases of Marlowe's during 2008 and 2009, 40 percent ended up being dismissed, often at prosecutors' request.
With a track record like that, you'd think Marlowe would have been ousted, or at least disciplined, long ago. But that didn't happen. Not only does she have no disciplinary actions on her official record, but apparently another truism of The Wire applies here as well: "Cops protect their own".
Despite the glaring and obvious red flags being raised by her behavior, police only began an investigation of her conduct after a prosecutor forced the issue with her superiors.
That was back in September, but she's still out there on active duty to this day. Somehow I don't feel safer with this police officer on the streets.
Now we have to ask ourselves, how many more people are sitting in jail right now saying "You've got the wrong guy, I'm being framed" while no one believes them? And how many more police officers like Marlowe are there? If her superiors didn't stop her from her erroneous ways, what's to stop any other officer?

I was a prosecutor for 4 years and have been doing criminal defense work for 2...I have only had 1 case with detective marlowe as a defense attorney. The charges were very serious and she was very fair to me and my client. I found her very easy to deal with and very fair. Just one man's opinion on one case he had with her... |

Yes this is pure freekin evil. This bitch apparently doesn't care if she has the right perp for a crime as long as she get's someone convicted. This bit... er uh cop needs to go spend a long time in prison. The hell with disciplinary actions. What she has been doing should be considered criminal behaviour. This is an absolute outrage!!!! |

The Blue Code effects many cities. At this very time I am fighting against an Office in New Albany for crookedness. I have taken it all the way up to the police chief and he said as long as the officer has a law he can use he is not abusing his power? This officer is friends with my ex wife and he had my truck towed from the front of my house using an ordnance that says you cannot leave a car parked longer then 24 hours. My ex wife even told me the day before he was goign to tow my truck and it is perfectly legal for them to do what ever they please, it is a fine to park in a fire zone and a fine to park to close to a rail road but if you park longer then 24 hours in front of your house they can tow your vehicle??? Its time for a change and I am going to make it happen just need a lawyer. |

Now, THIS is good stuff! It's local - and it's important to our community. Mojo could go a step further by providing LINKS to complain about this - and/or the generation of an "e" petition. |

Yes! This is very evil. Heres something the Lawyers don't want you to know. If you feel that a poLICE officer is abusing their office go to the FBI office in Louisville and swear out a complaint on these bastards. The FBI will investigate the complaint and if they find something wrong the will arrest the police officer. |

She should be fired immediately and possibly be considered for criminal charges depending on certain facts if she knowingly, and it would seem likely, intentionally sent an innocent person to jail. |

If I'm not mistaken, and know I'm not...police officers work for us, since we pay their salary!!! I believe not all people are cut out for police officer duty, since not everyone has the mentality to protect and serve...and to those officers, I say, go find another job!! And what's with an officer shooting a man with a hammer...I mean come on!! I thought that was what tasers and battons were for! Is Louisville in such desperate need for police officers...that we would have, or keep officers making these types of descisions on the force?? It takes a lot of extrordinary skills to be on a police force, and either additional training is required...or additional supervision!! |

This is in response to the "so called prosecutor" above. Surely you know dear naive sir your case may have been a mere fluke with Miss Marlowe. I'm sure some of the cases she presented are legit. BUT even one case presented without proper evidence and testimony should be an outrage to the public! There should be laws protecting the people from such arrogance and irresponsibility! In the bigger picture here, we seem to have a detective who has a lot of cases that are falling through due to lack of evidence and testimony. As a prosecutor you should also know that being called out by a freaking judge in a court room is a red flag to the criminal justice system to investigate the origin of the problem! I say investigate her fully and possibly put her behind bars for the damage she seems to have done to peoples lives and families. Just another example of our fine local law enforcement. <smirk>
and yes, she even looks freaking evil. |

Isn't it great...we sit here and write our comments, and watch the stories on the local news...mean while she is still on the police force with her smug look, and her "above the law metanlity"!! I believe police officers with NO integrity, are NO better than the people that commit crimes, and shouldn't be part of my/our LMPD!! |

Regardless of her intentions, if these allegations are true then she is at best incompetent and reckless in the execution of her duties. There's no reason she should still have a job, and there should be an investigation (by a body outside LMPD) as to whether or not more severe action should be taken. |

Update: instead of firing her, or sending her home with pay, or sending her home *without* pay, the LMPD has decided to merely transfer her:
