BBC Derby City Espresso Stout

Style: Coffee stout Served: Tap-pour into a pint glass at Derby City Espresso. Appearance: Typical dark-stout color with thin, tan head. Aroma: Typical stout scent with coffee undertones. Body: A little on the heavy side. Flavor: Just as advertised in the aroma. The main flavor is the roasted malt of a stout, but the coffee beans make for a good undertone. Overall thoughts: I am not a huge fan of coffee stouts. Most seem to be COFFEE stouts, where the coffee flaver overpowers everything. This one is not like that. By having the coffee as an undertone rather than THE DOMINATING ... more

Anderson Valley Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema

Style: Cream Ale Served: Bottle poured into a pint glass at Derby City Espresso. Appearance: Copper in color. Hazy. Thin off-white head. Aroma: Very malty aroma. Body: Very creamy in texture. Flavor: Unique. Toasted malty with hints of caramel and vanilla. Even just a little bit of spice added for good measure. Overall thoughts: This beer breaks a lot of norms. It fits as a summer beer, which is not true of most cream ales. Never have I had a cream ale that is this malty or flavorful. A lot of imagination went into this beer and worked beautifully. My Rating: 8.8 Group ... more

Just owned the fuck out of an apple.

Yes it was a pink lady apple. Yes it was juicy and all you could want in an apple. Yes I got it at the farmer's market down the road (jealous much? Yes.). No you cannot afford. You're probably still eating red delicious or gala apples. Gauche as fuck, Dylan. I split it in twain and removed the core with a knife. If you're still eating your apples one-handed and tossing the core you're as useful as my grandma, Estelle. Get with it. Apple eating technology has surpassed your base instincts. Visit William-Sonoma and expand your mind. Those peaches are giving me the stink eye. You're next, ... more

The Gordita Trailer

How do you sing the praises of a dining place that doesn't have a street address? Is it like Brigadoon? I wish...I love show tunes...it appears on weekends (Friday - Monday), more or less late in the late afternoon. It's the Gordita Trailer, a small white pull behind trailer that parks in the parking lot at Watterson Trail and Bardstown Road. Pat and Esperanza Costas and their family, pull in, off load the two tables and chairs, up the ez-ups and start mixing their magic. Who knew real Mexican food was so freaking good? Why are we eating the swill we get in the ubiquitous "Mexican" resta ... more

Unexpected Item on the Belt!

Do you have a love / hate relationship with the U-Scan lane? I do... On the one hand it makes a trip to Meijer, Kroger, wherever so much more rewarding...For example it provides the opportunity to avoid annoying personal contact with the underpaid associates of the retailer. Those with the happy task of sliding our sad selections across their laser scanners. We don't have to look them in the eye and read their minds while they're thinking...."This is the crap you really put in your body"?? At the same time knowing that they are just envious of the premium?? selections we are able to afford, an ... more

sneaking in the good stuff

baking secrets recently shared with a mojette friend... --- speaking of baking...(OK, we weren't but I am now) - made something interesting yesterday... this girl at the gym, a staff member, told me about "black bean brownies" - as I am always interested to sneak healthy things into my lil sugar freak (He had NOTHING but chicken fingers for dinner, would not even eat the fries!) - I thought I would try them... I blended up a can of black beans, with liquid, and a half cup of applesauce in the f.p. - then just added that to a box of brownie mix -no other liquid...baked as usual.. of course ... more

Tucher Kristall Weizen

Style: Kristalwiezen Served: Bottle at Charlestown Pizza Company Appearance: Clear gold in color. Lots of lacing and foamy head, as is common with weizen styles. Aroma: Mostly pear, banana, and matly aroma. Some hints of clove as well. Body: Light, crisp, and bubbly. Flavor: Much of what the aroma promises. Hints of banana, pear, and maybe some other fruity yeasts. Clove and malt provide the balance. Overall thoughts: I have to be in a mood to drink a regular weizen, simply because that style of beer tends to sit rather heavily in my stomache as I drink it. This particular ... more

Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale

Style: American Strong Ale, although it could be said to be "off-style." Served: Bottle at Charlestown Pizza Company Appearance: Dark, reddish brown. Thin head. Aroma: A bokay of hops - flowery, grassy, citrus. Some malty undertones. Body: Medium, almost creamy body. Very smooth. Flavor: You smell hops, you get hops. A mouthful. Despite the overwhelming pressence of hops, there is just enough malt there to blend with the variety of hops to balance out the beer. Overall thoughts: Yeah, it's off-style, but who cares? If you love the really hoppy IPAs, then this beverage is f ... more
