Company finds natural solution that turns plants into gasoline

After three years of clandestine development, a Georgia company is now going public with a simple, natural way to convert anything that grows out of the Earth into oil. J.C. Bell, an agricultural researcher and CEO of Bell Bio-Energy, Inc., says he's isolated and modified specific bacteria that will, on a very large scale, naturally change plant material – including the leftovers from food – into hydrocarbons to fuel cars and trucks. "What we're doing is taking the trash like corn stalks, corn husks, corn cobs – even grass from the yard that goes to the dump – that's what we can turn into oi ... more

Chickens in the coop

The chicks are still a bit downy. Eglu coop was delivered days ago, thought it'd be a great day to set it up. They got a bit confused at sundown and tried to roost under the water. Got them into the coop via the egg door. Right now I hope they're snuggled in. Still about 5 months or so before the first green egg is produced. Should get about 9 eggs a week from the 3 hens. Considering getting a brown egg layer at some point to up the quanity. Interested in talking with others keeping chickens in LOU. ... more

Styrofoam & Louisville: Ignorance is Dangerous

Are there any community-based initiatives in place regarding the importance of banning polystyrene (Styrofoam is a brand name you might be familiar with) #6 "to-go" containers so commonly used here in Louisville? Foam products are not biodegradable which means that they cannot be broken down in the environment by natural process. Therefore living forever, that's right, FOREVER, in our landfills right alongside most other plastics (disposable diapers!), nylon and tin cans. The dangerous nature of these materials make them a major contributor to litter and detrimental to wildlife that ingests i ... more

Bike Routes and Pedestrian Overpasses

Pedestrian overpasses are great when you can find them. Google Maps satellite view reveals only two over the Watterson: here and here. CARTKY.org links to a Google Maps scrolling map of Louisville Bike Routes. They also have Car-Free Guides to Louisville Neighborhoods, including Deer Park, St. Matthews, Clifton, and (soon) the Highlands. ... more

Education Vs. Environment (thoughts in my head)

I love seeing all the commercials and television shows etc., talking about going green. It is such a great thing and is well needed. The thing is, everything we do affects another thing, whether it be socially, the economy, or the environment. In Louisville we are experiencing a condundrum. We are putting more money towards cleaner water. Where is that money coming from? It is coming straight out of the pockets of Education. Go higher Kentucky or Go greener Kentucky. We have always tried to put more towards educating our children. We are now trying to put more towards our environment. W ... more

Insulation

I got my exterior walls insulated this past Fall and it really made a difference this Winter. I completely was able to stop using a space heater in my living room because it is no longer drafty. My electric and gas bill also went down dramatically, I only used half as much energy and gas in December. It also really helped increase the comfort inside my home; it's no longer drafty and I can keep the thermostat at a lower temperature, as well. The heat seems to stay around longer than before. I'd recommend insulating the exterior walls of any old home. My 1500 sq. foot home cost $900 to be ... more
