Olympic Trash Talking?
Once again, we see the dreamy principles of the Olympics violated in the real world.
American pole vaulter Jenn Stuczynski said, for the record, "I hope we do some damage, and, you know, kick some Russian butt.”
Brilliant.
She then proceeded to win the silver, while Russian Yelena Isinbayeva easily won the gold and even set a new World Record.
Trash talk is bad enough. Not backing it up is unforgivable.

Player Moves...
Henry's Fate?Chris Henry may return to the Bengals yet.
In fact, it seems like a certainty, with the injuries to Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
Even if the star wideouts are ready to play at the start of the regular season, it is doubtful that they will practice. Henry is suspended for the first four games of the season, but the Bengals need him for the practice team more than anything.
This move would be a win for the NFL as well. If Henry went to a big time program like Dallas, the league would feel pressured to let Henry slide on his typical arrests.
With Henry in

Begals Troubles
There's nothing much on the tube Sunday night, so I decided to tune in to watch the Bengals and Lions.
If the Bengals and Lions meeting in the regular season is as boring as horse racing, then a pre-season meeting is comparable to dog racing.
It's just that bad.
You can say "whatever" about the final score - 27-10, with the Lions posting seventeen in the meaningless fourth quarter.
Whatever.
There. I said it.
But there were several disturbing occurrences in this match-up for Bengals fans.
Palmer had difficulty moving the ball against Detroit's starting defense. Chad Johnson le

The A.P. Hath Spoken...
Georgia won the award no one wants -- preseason #1 in the A.P. poll.
The team ranked #1 at the start of the year rarely makes it to the end of the season as #1.
It's more a curse than a coup.
Part of the reason it's detrimental is the media scrutiny from Day One.
All the hype will lead to a bigger bull's eye than the afterthought SEC East team is used to. They sneaked up on everyone last year and backed into the award for "Most Screwed By the BCS". This year, everyone will circle Georgia on their calendar. It's every team's Game of the Year. LSU will happily let someone else

Yankees Crumbling?
The erosion of the Yankees organization has been a slow process. But it seems like the end of their playoff run may have finally arrived.
Baseball may be the sport where Jerry Krause's ill-fated statement is most true: "Organizations build championships." In all the years of success from the 1970's on to recent years, George Steinbrenner was at the helm and in complete control. Steinbrenner is now reportedly a broken and powerless man, yet the Yankees go on under new management.
And the new management is poised for failure.
Gone is Steinbrenner's knack for finding every other team's

A Pathetic Display
Once in a while, anti-social behavior in sports transcends itself into the world of the bizarre.
How about a 49-year old man parading around a tennis court, shouting vulgarities at the Umpire and flashing an obscene gesture at fans?
This has nothing to do with pro-wrestling. It was John McEnroe at his finest. And it wasn't in 1978. Try 2008. Ejected from the Hall of Fame Champions Cup. Nice going, Champ.
Somehow, it almost seems okay when a 20-something athlete runs off the football field flashing gang signs, or when Ken Griffey, Jr. made a throat-slashing gesture at an announcer. T

Bend It Like Brett
Last summer, David Beckham madness gripped the country.
Beckham arrived in the United States to play "football", or as snooty Americans call it, "soccer", for the L.A. Galaxy, reminiscent of Wayne Gretzky's signing with the L.A. Kings. Beckham couldn't go to a McDonalds and order a Happy Meal without making a stir on Page Six of the New York Post.
This year, it's Brett Favre's turn. Favre can't exchange meaningful glances with the quarterback coach without getting a mention on ESPN's "The Mort Report."
Today's installment of "A Day in the Life of Brett Favre" included reports of

Olympic Duplicity
First we learned China doctored the video footage of the fireworks display at the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. Now we learned the little girl who sang the Chinese National Anthem was a big phony, too.
Lip synched, because Chinese officials felt the real singer wasn't attractive enough to present as a symbol of China to the world.
Griffey UpdateI don't think the Chinese government could have done more to show their true colors if they had tried.
The path out of Cincinnati hasn't been smooth for Ken Griffy Jr. He's played in eight games since leaving the Reds, and has only five h

Live ain't what it used to be
Hmmm. I thought "live" meant "as you are watching". But I've seen several instances where I'm watching something "live" on NBC where I already know what happened thanks to watching SportCenter on ESPN.
WTF?
I got no problem with them raking in some cash for commercials, but don't f-ing lie about whether or not the results are already known.

I'm Ate Up With The Olympics
But apparently I'm not alone. The Courier-Journal reported today that the 2008 Olympics in Beijing are on their way to being the most-watched Olympics in U.S. history, and possibly even the most watched in the history of the world. I suppose the high viewership is a result of the controversy of having the Olympics in China in the first place, but that is not why the Olympics have been on in my house.
The truth is that Friday night I happened upon the opening ceremony of the Olympics and thought that I was going to blog today about how I didn't give a crap about the Olympics this year for the

Reds Unload The Other One...
The Reds officially started over today when they sent Adam Dunn packing.
Dunn has always been a big part of the problem in Cincinnati. All you have to do is look around the division to see why.
Compare Dunn to Albert Pujols.
Of course it's not a fair comparison, because Dunn is not in Pujols class. But bear with me a moment.
Pujols is the kind of guy you can build a team around. He hits for power and average.
Pujols gets a lot of home runs like Dunn, but he also bats well over .300. Dunn bats under .250 for his career. And he was batting .233 before the trade.
Funny ho

The Olympics is supposedly about bringing people together and learning about different cultures. Not kicking some Russion butt. Perhaps Stuczynski will spend the next four years mulling over her defeat and learning to think of her opponents as individuals instead of "Russians".
Personally, I'm betting on her adopting a double dose of stewing and steroids.
Lawson DecisionTy Lawson, the starting point guard for the favorite to win next year's National Championship of college basketball, pleaded guilty to underage drinking and driving.
In exchange, prosecutors agreed ...
