Japan Chapter 2: A Home-Made Japanese Meal

Day 2 continued. Ena showed my boys the video games her husband has and they began playing a game together. We were all so very tired; I laid down while they were playing and fell asleep. Ena woke me up to roll out the futon mattress for me, so that I didn't have to lie directly on the tatami mats. I snoozed and it felt great. I had zero energy left in me. About a half hour later, I woke up to see Logan passed out next to me and I commented “where's Noah?” “It's okay, there he is”, she said pointing above my head to where Noah was lying perpendicular to me on a pile of blankets. He wa ... more

natural laws of vacation

G and I went to the beach last week - Chincoteague Island, DelMarVa - home of the Wild Ponies! (no kidding, that is not the school sports team, they really have a herd of wild ponies there...running around everywhere, the place is lousy with them!) Anyway, the details of the trip are mundane enough, nice weather, long drive, beautiful beach, cramped accommodations, fried clams and oysters, sand in the shorts, T-Shirts and souvenirs...yada yada.. On the trek however, the following natural laws of vacation dawned on my sun muddled mind: 1. Road trip half life - on any road trip, a 6 year old ... more

Japan Chapter 1: Aroma of the Tatami Mats

Day 1 and Day 2 July 13th and 14th, 2008 July 15th, 1:55 a.m. I'm tired. It's been a very long day. It started at 4:30 a.m. in Louisville when we got up to leave for the airport. Traveling on the plane was uneventful. The boys actually enjoyed the plane ride due to the fact there were personal screens on the seats in front of us, so they could play games and watch videos without cost. I had forbade them to bring their Nintendo DS on the plane as I wanted this to be an “electronics-free” vacation; I had actually loaded up the carry-on with books so they could read . Well, the screens on ... more

Fire camp

7/26/08 So I kinda told you on my profile what I'm up to now. The weather is great here in Carmel valley Ca. I been cooking for fire fighters for about two weeks now I guess. The numbers go up, and down. We are due to demobilize this coming Monday pending the basin complex fires intensity and crew that needs fed.I came on the scene a total stranger and people kinda scoffed at the fact of being a culinary major, but people have been warming up to me pretty good. We are a rolling kitchen of fourty with six of us cooking for the masses. 12 hours a day 7 days a week preparing dinner for 500 to 200 ... more

Vacation 6-5-08

This is a journal of my Vacation with Melinda. On Thursday, June 5, 2008, Melinda and I climbed into her car, and drove to Sandusky Ohio, home of Cedar Point, Roller Coaster Capital of the world. We had a wonderful trip planned out including a trip up to Niagra Falls. Thursday 6-5-08 Left the house at horrible o'clock in the morning. Arrived at Cedar Point some time after noon. Entered park, and encountered the most non friendly employees ever. Attempted to ride Millennium Force, one of the tallest Steel Roller Coasters in the world. After waiting in line for two hours, for the front ... more

Vacation 6-10-08

Tuesday, 6-10-08 I woke up to find that Melinda had already packed, and loaded the car. We were heading home. We traded off driving duties, and I slept a little more. I was going through my usual post trip depression. I hate for trips to end, and they sometimes leave me feeling down. We considered stopping by Kings Island, but decided it was time to end the trip. We made it home safe, and we were happy to be home. ... more

Vacation, 6-9-08

Monday, 6-9-08 Once again, we crawled out of bed bright and early, realizing that this was our last day in the park. I had wanted from day one to try to win a giant Tails doll from Sonic the Hedgehog. My daughter Wynter is a huge tails fan. During the course of the day, we stopped in several game areas, and attempted to win a tails doll. I spent way to much money on skeeball trying to win one. In the end, we won one on the silly squirt gun game that all amusement parks have. However, I also learned the secret to throwing the wiffle balls in the basket for prizes. But, I am getting way ... more

Vacation, 6-8-08

Sunday, 6-8-08. Back to Cedar Point. We figured that the park could be somewhat dead, but employees had warned us that it would be crazy busy. Our solution…….Water Park Day. We started at the park bright and early, and we both managed to squeeze onto Top Thrill Dragster. First, we rode it from the middle of the ride, and then we risked it, and squeezed into the front seats. OMG, what a rush and what a thrilling ride it was. Nothing can compare to launching down a ¼ mile straight track at 128 mph, only to go completely vertical and cresting the top at 420 feet in the air. At that point ... more

Vacation, 6-7-08

Saturday, 6-7-08 Got up at way to early, and drove 4 hours to Niagra Falls US side. We arrived at Niagara Falls on the US side at about 10:00 am. It took about 4 ½ hours to drive there from Sandusky. I have never looked at the Falls from the US side. My family always went to the Canadian side. Melinda and I parked at a lot for $10, and walked over to the US parks building to take a look at the falls. From there, we decided to pay the $2.00 each to take an elevator down to the base of the American falls. After a crowded elevator trip down, we noticed a ton of people wearing disposable rain ... more

Vacation, 6-6-08

Friday 6-6-08 We arrived at 8:30 am. Since we were platinum members, we got in the park at 9:00am, and ticket holders did not get in until 10:00. We found Mark, and he took us to park ops, where they called the operators of their newest coaster Maverick, and told them to let us on the ride without a wait. On our way back to Maverick, we noticed that Mel. Force, had no line at all. We got in line, and waited for a blue car. Success, I fit. It really worked, and that quickly became one of my favorite coasters of all time. We then went on back to Maverick, and wow, what an incredible coas ... more

Holiday

Oh how I have missed blogging here. But I have been journaling privately and if it hadn't been for my recent limetied access to mojo I might not have done that. I guess sll adversity has some benefit in it. This past weekend my family (my husband, our daughter, my grandmother and I) went to Santa Claus In. for the 4th of July weekend. What a glorious little vacation. I can't say enough good things about Holiday World for family oriented summertime enjoyment. The best part of the weekend was lighting twelve packs of sparklers, my little girl's first time with them, and watching her have ... more
