Movies that were canceled right before they were released

Of all the many entries on this list, A Rainy Day in New York occupies one unique place: it was completed and received an official release. But before you think we’re just going crazy with so many crushing failures, know that the road to release for A Rainy Day in New York has been a long one and included one very controversial cancellation.

The film was written and directed by Woody Allen and was scheduled for a wide release in 2018. Starring Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning and Selena Gomez, the premise and trappings were typical of Allen’s film: stars intertwining in and out of love – or at least the hesitant, neurotic version that Allen prefers, while fitting in with exuberant homage to the great artists of the past and, of course, New York. Although critical opinions about the film are such that it fresh, uninteresting businessit wasn’t what prevented its release – it was Allen himself.

Allen has long been under scrutiny for alleged sexual harassment, most notably sexual abuse adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, and in 2018 the #MeToo movement sparked a surge of interest in these accusations. Because of how Hollywood Reporter let’s just say the Amazon distributor has “cooled down”. Allen sued Amazon, they eventually settled the case and Rainy Day in New York was released on Amazon Prime in 2021.
