I'm at a new school, and I'm trying to get involved with various student groups. I started going to the LGBT student group this week. They spent the meeting deciding the theme for the Alternative Prom they host each year. Here are a few of the theme ideas they put up to a vote:
- Fairytale Faggots - Faggots of the Caribbean - The Spy who Fagged Me
Here's my biggest problem with those... the college has a zero tolerance policy on hate speech. I already had to deal with 6 (presumably) straight students in one of my classes calling another (presumably) straight student a faggot, IN CLASS.
And here, these little gay kids think it's a good idea to name their dance "faggot."
I was dumbfounded. Thoughts? Reactions?
Oh, and "Fairytale Faggots" won, but the name was changed to "FAIRY Tails." Which isn't much better, but whatever.

I hate the F word.
It goes right along with the N word in my book.
Remember, when Perez called Will.I.Am the f word?
My lord. Then the manager beat his ass.
Perez said he wanted to call Will the most vile word he could think of.
This post brought to you by the letters: F, N, and I

Why is it mainly geared towards gay men?? Maybe do something with the word "homo" in it.

Good point.
What is weird is that I kept seeing it on profiles on here so I just put a disclaimer on my profile a couple of days ago.
Any usage of a derogatory term for gay people will get you verbally raped.

Since it was my first meeting, I just sort of kept my mouth shut. But, I was glad when someone said he was not going to attend if it said faggot.
And, definition of irony, after choosing the theme (almost with the word faggot), they had sign ups for diversity sensitivity training.
I actually liked the name "The Gayties" Like "Gay 80's" but I'm tired of the 80's. Plus, most of them weren't even born yet in the 80's.

I think Northern Indiana wrote the book on intolerance. Good luck with those kids!

It is definitely not Louisville up here. People who wouldn't even get a second glance on Bardstown Rd have people turning around with looks of shock on their faces up here.
But, the people who work in the college are all cool.

I guess if we're to be taken seriously, we should be a little serious ourselves.
But, dang it, when I'm messing around with some of my gay friends, it's hilarious to call each other faggots.
Calling me, faggot, at certain intimate moments is a turn on too. (blush)

While I don't support calling each other faggots in private, this was going to be printed up on flyers and posted around campus.
And then, I'd have to discipline students who use it in class, after them seeing people use it. It just wouldn't work out.

I reckon it's akin to black people calling each other 'nigger'. It's not really derogatory unless either term is used as an insult, I guess. Of course, I seriously doubt the founders of the NAACP thought it would be cool to instead name it the 'National Association for the Advancement of Niggers'.

It's much like the N word. People think it is ok to use it unless they assume that someone means it in a deragatory manner. I worked at HQ back in the 90's and we had fun with the gay people who worked there using the f word and lots of other jokes and they came back with breeder jokes. It was all in fun and none of us minded. People need to lighten up and have more fun.

So, $HY, are you saying I should have lightened up when the students in my class were calling another student in my class a faggot? Just ignored it, it was all in good fun? Or maybe I should have called the Jewish student who was part of that group a kike or oven fuel.
HHJ, I see what you say about using it in private but this is going on flyers to be posted around campus.

Los, you telling them no was fine since it was going to be posted. I'll bet that if someone called them the f word even as a joke they would be upset. You can't have it both ways. What I am saying is that gay people and straight people need to lighten up and chill out over words.

I think that might be the point I'm trying to get at... they need to pick, and not just gays, but blacks as well. Either they (personally, not as a group) get offended when ANYONE, even themselves, uses the word or don't get offended when anyone uses the word.
Because people have used that word in hateful ways towards me, I don't like it. And so, I won't use it, even in joking, even in the company of only gay men. It doesn't piss me off, but I still avoid it. Just like I avoid kike, wop, and spic.
I used to run an after-school program in the projects. The kids I was working with often used the word "nigga." They told me it wasn't the same word as nigger. So, one day soon after, I called one of them a nigga. The gasps from them was astonishing. Thus, I said to them, "If *I* can't say the word, if you get offended when *I* use it, then you sure as hell can't say it either."

I dont use any of those words. Oh I cuss like Sam Jackson but I typically dont use terms like fag, nigga, and cracker. Don't know why, I just don't and try not to. I tend to not like people giving me a ghetto view, I don't carrry myself that way. I dont see a reason to say faggot unless you're a visiting Australian looking for a cigarette.
