Football superstar Neymar made an online advertisement for far-right President Jair Bolsonaro shortly before the Brazilian election.
The attacking player of Paris St. Germain published a video on TikTok in which he smiles mimicking a song that calls out to vote for Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro, who was recently far behind leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in polls, tweeted Neymar’s video, adding: “Thank you, @neymarjr!” added. A new head of state will be elected in Brazil on Sunday.
Wide distribution via social media
The day before, Neymar, who has more than eight million subscribers on TikTok and nearly 180 million on Instagram, thanked the far-right incumbent Bolsonaro for visiting a children’s center he had set up in Sao Paulo. Communications Minister Fabio Faria and Bolsonaro’s son released a corresponding video message from the Brazil national team captain.
While other Brazilian footballers such as Rai (ex-Paris) or Juninho (ex-Lyon) have already expressed sympathy for Lula, Neymar is the first current Brazilian international to show his support for both candidates. A month ago, Bolsonaro published a photo of him with a ball that Neymar is said to have given him.
